We have all made them haven't we?. Those on-line marketing 
mistakes we later kick ourselves for.

I always put them into the following categories.

1) The Outright Losses.

These are mistakes which cost you in terms of lost money,wasted 
time or damaged reputation. If you're really unlucky, a single 
blunder can cost you in all 3 of these areas.

2) Expensive Inefficiencies.

These are errors which are made in terms of foregone profits.
This category is often more difficult to own up to because your 
techniques might be earning you a profit. In which case it is 
easy to overlook the fact that you are still making costly 
mistakes.

The blunder which I often continue to make is forgetting the 
following rule:-

"If It Is Easy and Profitable Today,
It Will Be Less Profitable Tommorrow"

This occurs when you continue to sell a product or use a 
technique beyond the point of profitability.

It's obvious really, nature abhors a vacuum, those individuals 
who discover a new effective technique will continue to use it 
until enough people have copied it to the point where it is 
either ineffective or too costly. What do I mean by too 
costly?.
A classic example is in the field of Pay-Per-Click advertising. 
Remember the good old days when you could advertise on Overture 
for $0.01 per click?.
Savvy advertisers cleaned up before the PPC search engines 
realised the true value of what they where offering. Nowadays 
unless you seek out new ways of making it work for you, you will 
see most of your affiliate commissions eaten up by PPC charges.

So what is the answer? It about being creative, following trends 
and expoiting them before others jump on the band wagon. The 
following is a concrete example of what I mean.

One of the developing trends is that of Search Engine users 
becoming more experienced. A less experienced user looking for 
a job will type in

'jobs in new york'

The more experienced user will probably type in

'jobsinny'

Get the picture!

True, if the search doesn't give the desired result then the 
more experienced user will go back to first principles. But, be 
aware, the trend of eliminating spaces and using abbreviations 
in the query is one which is gaining ground.

Similarly, anyone who has used PPC for any length of time knows 
the value of miss-spelled keywords. These should be the bread 
and butter of any effective PPC campaign because you get the 
same qualified traffic at a fraction of the cost.
